What is Schutzhund ... ?
Schutzhund is a German word meaning "protection dog". It refers to a sport
that focuses on developing and evaluating those traits in dogs that make them
more useful and happier companions to their owners. Schutzhund work concentrates
on three parts. Many are familiar with the obedience work of the American Kennel
Club's affiliates and will recognize the first two parts, tracking and
obedience. The Schutzhund standards for the third part, protection work, are
similar to those for dogs in police work.
While dogs of other breeds are also actively involved in the sport of Schutzhund
and often follow similar criteria for breeding purposes, this breed evaluation
test was developed specifically for the German Shepherd Dog. Schutzhund is
intended to demonstrate the dog's intelligence and utility. As a working trial,
Schutzhund measures the dog's mental stability, endurance, structural
efficiencies, ability to scent, willingness to work, courage, and trainability.
This working dog sport offers an opportunity for dog owners to train their dog
and compete with each other for recognition of both the handler's ability to
train and the dog's ability to perform as required. It is a sport enjoyed by
persons of varied professions, who join together in a camaraderie born of their
common interest in working with their dogs. Persons of all ages and conditions
of life even those with significant disabilities enjoy Schutzhund as a sport.
Often, it is a family sport.

What is a DDR German Shepherd also reffered to
as the East German Shepherd ... ?
About the East German Shepherd Dog Also referred to as the DDR German
Shepherd
The German Shepherd Dog
of the former East Germany, the Deutsche Demokratische Republik or "DDR"
(1949-1990). The DDR was a political, social, economic, and geographic entity
that was physically solidified with the tragically oppressive construction of
the Berlin Wall in 1961, and which began its political and physical dissolution
with the history-making and liberating fall of that barrier on November 9, 1989.
Just as the
geo-political entity formerly known as the "DDR" no longer exists today, the "DDR
German Shepherd Dog" is a historical relic of a bygone time and place, and it no
longer exists today. Rather, the generations of true "DDR" bloodlines are
limited to a span of roughly four decades of breeding and development in the
former East Germany. These bloodlines may be found in the third, fourth, and
further generations back in the pedigrees of working, sporting, and companion
dogs found around the world today. These modern representatives of the German
Shepherd Dog breed, with a genetic heritage in the former DDR bloodlines, have
their true provenance determined by the place of their actual birth.

What is a Czech German Shepherd ... ?
As I understand it all Czech dogs are from The kennel Z Pohranicni straze (Z
PS). It was founded in the year 1955 for the single purpose of production and
training of dogs that would be solely used for the protection of the
Czechoslovakian People's Republic's, and since 1968 Czechoslovakian Socialist
Republic's borders. Most of the dogs were acquired from the territory of former
East Germany (DDR) and also there were dogs from Czechoslovakia used for
breeding; the ones that excelled in their character qualities.

What is a West German Shepherd ... ?
Usually when stated West German Shepherd it's meaning from the West German
Show Line. The West German Show Line is the breed type most popular in Germany.
They are bred for competition in the show ring, but also must have working
titles (Sch). The West German Show Lines tend to be more angulated, and do not
seem to have as much working or prey drive as the working line gsd. They make
wonderful family companions, but they do need lots of daily exercise and need
training to do a job of some sort to avoid behavioral or destructive problems.
They perform well as herding, service, search and rescue, guide dogs, and
therapy dogs.

What is an American German Shepherd... ?
Usually when stated "American German Shepherd" it means from The American
Show Lines. The American Show Lines are bred for the AKC show ring They tend to
have a much sharper angulation in the hindquarters, and are longer and leaner
than the German Lines. The American show lines seem to be less active, and are
softer in their temperament than the German Lines. They make a wonderful family
companion, especially for a first time owner, and also make good therapy dogs,
as well as service dog.

Common foods that are poisonous for your dog to eat... ?
Common household foods that are poisonous for your beloved K-9 friend
Grapes and Raisins
Grapes and raisins are toxic for dogs. Grapes and raisins (which are
dried grapes) will trigger acute renal (kidney) failure. They kidneys act as
filters for toxins in the dog's body, therefore, when the kidneys are not
functioning properly, toxins accumulate in the body and lead to death due to
toxins. Urine production will also slow significantly or cease in cases of
grape or raising toxicity in dogs, so this can suggest a very serious
problem if observed in an animal who may have accessed grapes or raisins.
Onions and Garlic
Onions and garlic can trigger a form of anemia where the body's red blood
cells burst. This results in poor oxygen supply to the vital organs and
tissues. When fed regularly in small doses, serious and potentially deadly
nutritional deficiencies can also result. So dog owners should always check
ingredients of prepared foods before offering these foods to pets. Baby food
very often contains onion powder. So French onion soup and other food items
containing onions and garlic should be crossed off the list of dog-safe
foods.
Avocado
Avocado fruit, pits, leaves and the actual plant are all potentially
poisonous to dogs, along with other pets like cats, mice, rats, birds,
rabbits, horses, cattle and goats, among others. Avocados will trigger fluid
accumulation in the lungs and chest, leading to difficulty breathing and
death due to oxygen deprivation. Fluid accumulation can also occur in the
heart, pancreas and abdomen.
Tomatoes, Potatoes and Rhubarb
Tomatoes, potatoes and rhubarb contain oxalates, which trigger
abnormalities with the nervous system, kidneys and digestive tract.
Especially toxic are green tomatoes, green potatoes, potato skins, and
tomato leaves and plants, can trigger tremors, seizure and heart
arrhythimia, so tomatoes should never be given to dogs.
Cat Food & other Fatty Foods
Cat food is very high in fats and protein and when ingested by a dog,
particularly in large amounts or on a regular basis, the cat food can cause
a bout of potentially deadly pancreatitis. It should be noted that
all high-fat foods – particularly ham and bacon - have the ability to
trigger pancreatitis, therefore pet owners should also use caution when
offering table scraps that are high in fats.
Alcohol
Dogs cannot tolerate alcohol, even in small amounts. And the hops in beer
are also potentially toxic to dogs. Alcohol ingestion by dogs can result in
intoxication, liver failure, coma, seizures and death.
Nuts
Macadamia nuts and walnuts are toxic to dogs, and these foods can also
trigger pancreatitis. Peanuts can trigger a deadly allergic reaction.
Mushrooms
Mushrooms contain toxins that will trigger numerous organ systems,
including the kidneys, liver and brain. Nervous system abnormalities,
seizure, coma, vomiting, and death can all result when a dog ingests
mushrooms.
Other miscellaneous foods that are toxic to dogs include: raw eggs and
egg whites, raw fish, nutmeg, salt, tobacco, trash items, persimmons,
marijuana, yeast and dough containing yeast, liver, marijuana, hops, human
iron supplements and xylitol, which is contained in chewing gum and candies.
In the event of an emergency involving a pet who may have ingested a
toxic food or other potentially deadly substance, pet owners should contact
a veterinarian and/or an animal poison control hotline, such as the ASPCA
Poison Control Center, which can be contacted by calling 888-426-4435.
Chocolate
Chocolate is toxic to dogs, though a toxic dose will vary depending on
factors like whether the dog ate the chocolate on an empty stomach, if the
dog is particularly sensitive to chocolate, and the type of chocolate, since
dark chocolate is more toxic, whereas milk chocolate less so, and white
chocolate must be consumed in extremely large quantities to cause a serious
problem.
Theobromine is the toxic ingredient in chocolate. Theobromine serves to
stimulate the central nervous system, resulting in rapid heart rate,
seizures, tremors, vomiting, diarrhea, drooling, panting and extremely fast
pulse.
